9Therefore justice is far from us,
and
righteousness does not overtake us;
we hope for light,
and behold, darkness,
and
for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
10 We grope for the wall like the blind;
we
grope like those who have no eyes;
we stumble at noon
as in the twilight
Isaiah 42
1 Behold my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen, in whom my soul delights;
I have put my Spirit upon him;
he will bring forth justice to the nations.
2He will not cry aloud or lift up his voice,
or make it heard in the street;
3 a bruised reed he will not break,
and a faintly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.
till he has established justice in the earth;
and the coastlands wait for his law.
5Thus says God, the LORD,
who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and what comes from it,
who gives breath to the people on it
and spirit to those who walk in it:
6"I am the LORD; I have called you in righteousness;
I will take you by the hand and keep you;
I will give you as a covenant for the people,
a light for the nations,
7 to open the eyes that are blind,
to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon,
from the prison those who sit in darkness.
8I am the LORD; that is my name;
my glory I give to no other,
nor my praise to carved idols.
9Behold, the former things have come to pass,
and new things I now declare;
before they spring forth
I tell you of them."
16 And I will lead the blind
in a way that they do not know,
in paths that they have not known
I will guide them.
I will turn the darkness before them into light,
the rough places into level ground.
These are the things I do,
and I do not forsake them.
Isaiah 49
6he says:"It is too light a thing that you should be my servant
to raise up the tribes of Jacob
and to bring back the preserved of Israel;
I will make you as a light for the nations,
that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth."
The Messiah wouldn't come to bring light and salvation only to the nation of Israel. No, that was too small a mission. His coming was for the whole earth. His coming would bring the light of the knowledge of God to all nations.
Christ was the perfect representation of what God's chosen servant should look like. God had chosen Israel to be his servant, but they had rejected God's direction. So Christ came to be all that God had wanted Israel to be. ("I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing.") And he came to be the substitution for them in all that they deserved because of their failure.
We, likewise, have been chosen to be God's servants, and we have Christ as an example to follow. Not only is the light for us, to help us and guide us and comfort us, but it is for the world. We are to share the light of the knowledge of God that we have been given so that we can bring glory to God and participate in the fulfillment of his plan, "for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea."
2 Corinthians 4:6 " For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give us the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ."
